“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
Maths Vision Statement
Maths is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world; the ability to reason mathematically; an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Our curriculum will enable children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. They will reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. Pupils at our school can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Maths Implementation statement
The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Implementation of the Maths Curriculum
The curriculum is led and overseen by the Maths subject lead. A regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review and the celebration of good practice will contribute to the ongoing commitment to evolve and improve further. The Maths lead works closely with the local Maths Hub and we are currently on the 'sustaining mastery' element of the support programme.
The teaching, learning and sequencing of the Maths curriculum is implemented through:
- A blocked curriculum approach to ensure fluency of the basic skills and a focus on 'Ready to Progress' criteria. This is mapped out carefully in the Power Maths scheme.
- Clear learning objectives from which to plan, teach and assess knowledge which build in small steps.
- Access to staff CPD to ensure clear understanding.
- In the EYFS there is a heavy focus on number skills through the delivery of the mastering number programme.
- Concrete and pictoral resources which are available to support the teaching of Maths at Our Lady of Lourdes.
- A focus on fluency throughout school using resources such as mastering number, times table rockstars, the 99 club etc.
- Children who are not making the expected progress are supported through pre teaching, same day interventions and individual support programmes such as Dynamo Maths.
